How to succeed at life

I wonder if we know how to succeed at life when everyone is busy using their smartphones and other electronic devices? I am usually an early adopter when it comes to technology. After all, I’ve already got Periscope on my iphone. But I saw a video on Facebook the other day of a woman giving birth in her car and it raised several questions for me about how we are living our lives. The young couple were apparently on their way to a birthing center and the husband certainly sounded supportive and was no doubt thinking he should just get his wife to the center fast, but I couldn’t get over the fact that the phone (or his camera) was set up and pointed at the passenger seat and at this young wife in labour. The video was very stable so it was clearly set up beforehand. I was also struck by the fact that as his pregnant wife was screaming that the baby was coming, he kept driving, rather than pull over to help her. To be fair, he eventually did ask her if he should stop or keep going and she told him to keep going but here’s where my head went with this: we are so focused on recording the events of our lives that we are not present in the moments of our lives! Here are some examples from cartoonists who have already started commenting on this phenomenon. Cartoonists have their fingers on the pulse of society, and their comics are often our early warning systems for our lives.

Granted, all of this is a somewhat tricky topic as most of my clients find me via my website and social media so I’m not saying we need to all become Luddites. But I am so disheartened of late, that we are missing what really matters in life, while we are busy recording life and taking selfies. I wonder if you are willing to do an experiment? What if you allowed yourself to be in the moment of your life’s moments? What if you checked your email just twice a day? (Hey I’m realistic, if nothing else. We do need to stay in touch and get some work done!) What if you just roll on the floor with your joyous toddler, rather than recording a video of you rolling on the floor with your toddler? How would your life be different if you let go of your smartphones? Would it be more “real”? Would you be more present to emotions, both positive and negative? Would you have more time for living? I suspect we would be more present, grounded and connected with each other, not just the “friends” we have online, many of whom we don’t actually know. Our smartphone “blindness” would turn to clear vision and seeing what is real and what is important.

3 Tips on How To Succeed At Life

  1. Limit your time on your smartphone. Plain and simple, I call it a “Phone Fast”. Find one time in your day when you would typically use your phone and shut it off for at least one hour. If you have children and teens at home, start some conversations about the addiction to technology.
  2. Be present. At least once a day, have a conversation or participate in an activity with someone without using your phone, whether googling a topic that comes up, checking your email, your texts or using any apps. Over time, see if you can increase this practice of being present and unplugged.
  3. Spend more time in nature. Stop and smell the flowers, breathe deeply and just BE. Now this is what I call a great and successful life!

We are ALL “Inspirational Dreamers” who can share our dream stories! When I launched my blog on Facebook, I asked prominent dreamers and authors to share the story of their journey with dreams with my followers. It was so well received that I wanted to expand it into a regular series for my blog so more people would see it. The truth is, when we share our dreams and our experiences with dreaming, we inspire others. I’ll share how you can become an inspirational dreamer too from the original post on June 17, 2015. Robert Moss

Robert Moss describes himself as a dream teacher, on a path for which there has been no career track in our culture. He is the creator of Active Dreaming, an original synthesis of dreamwork and shamanism. Born in Australia, he survived three near-death experiences in childhood. He leads popular seminars all over the world, including a three-year training for teachers of Active Dreaming. A former lecturer in ancient history at the Australian National University, he is a best-selling novelist, journalist and independent scholar. You created Active Dreaming, an original synthesis of dreamwork and shamanism that is now being taught and practiced in more than 20 countries. What is Active Dreaming? What is the life of a dream teacher like?

 Active Dreaming is my original synthesis of shamanism and contemporary dreamwork. It offers three core areas of practice.
First, Active Dreaming is a way of talking and walking our dreams, of bringing energy and guidance from the dreamworld into everyday life. We learn how to create a safe space where we can share dreams of the night and dreams of life with others, receive helpful feedback, and encourage each other to move towards creative and healing action. We discover that each of us can play guide for others. Above all, we learn to take action to embody the energy and guidance of our dreams in everyday life.
Second, Active Dreaming is a method of shamanic lucid dreaming.  It starts with simple everyday practice and extends to profound group experiences of time travel, soul recovery and the exploration of multidimensional reality. It is founded on the understanding that we don’t need to go to sleep in order to dream. The easiest way to become a conscious or lucid dreamer is to start out lucid and stay that way.
Third, Active Dreaming is a way of conscious living. It calls us to remember and tell and live our bigger story in such a way that it can be heard and received by others. It is about navigating by synchronicity and grasping that the energy we carry and the attitudes we choose have magnetic effect on the world around us, drawing or repelling encounters and circumstances.

What is my life as a dream teacher like? It is like being on one of the world’s best vacations every day. I travel and teach from Brazil to Bucharest, from Paris to Portland, and everywhere I have the joy of seeing the light come on in people’s eyes when they discover that there are fun, high-energy ways to play with their dreams and live their best dreams.

You say that we can all become “shamans of the breakfast table”. Tell us how!

Anyone who dreams, as the Kawahiv, an Amazonian dreaming people say, is “a little bit shaman”. We stand on the brink of claiming this power when we remember our dreams and start to develop the practice of working with dreams as daily practice. I have developed a fast, fun method of everyday dream sharing. I call this Lightning Dreamwork, because it is meant to be fast as a lightning bolt, and to focus and harness energy. What Lightning Dreamwork provides is a way of dream sharing that can reach temporary closure in just five or ten minutes, exploding any alibi that we don’t have time for this. This approach also offers clear guard rails that insure that we will not intrude on each other’s privacy and will never presume to tell another person what his or her dreams mean. The process always leads to creative or healing action to bring the energy and guidance of dreams into daily life.

You say that in dreaming we are all time travellers and this can become conscious practice. How?

As dreamers, we are time travellers. With or without intention, we travel to the past and the future as well as parallel worlds. This can become conscious practice, and we can learn to fold time in the sense of being present, mind to mind, with other personalities in other times, sharing gifts and insights with each other. Our ability to travel into the future is essential to our survival and well-being. We not only bring back memories of future events for which we – and sometimes whole communities – can then prepare. We visit possible futures, and our ability to read our memories of the possible future and then take appropriate action can determine whether we can escape a future event we don’t like, or manifest one that we want.
How? We start by recording and working with spontaneous night dreams. We learn to value the scout who goes out every night, in dreaming, to identify challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and to work with his information. Every morning, he brings us memories of the future – and also glimpses of past times and parallel times.
Dream memories of this kind are ideal portals for conscious journeys – for which we use shamanic drumming in the workshops – to explore past, future, or parallel times. We can learn to go back to a younger self – as I went back to my strange, solitary boy self – to offer support and mentoring. We can visit our soul family and learn how the dramas of other lives in other times may be influencing our present lives.

You say that treasures await us in the Place between Sleep and Awake. What kind of treasures and how do we find them?

The easiest way to become a lucid or conscious dreamer is to spend more time in the twilight zone between waking and sleep, or between sleep and waking. Tinker Bell told Peter Pan to look for her in the Place between Sleep and Awake. This liminal state is a place of encounter with inner guides and transpersonal visitors. It is also a place of heightened psychic perception and creative breakthroughs, where it is easy to make connections that escape the daily mind.


Become An Inspirational Dreamer!

Ok, maybe you haven’t written as many books about dreams as Robert Moss, but he has dream stories just as we all do. Dreaming is a experience we all share. Here are some ways you can inspire others. I’d love to hear about some ways you have inspired others so please post!

  • Share a dream– This is top on my list! The simple act of sharing a dream, connects you to others, gives you ideas and inspiration about your dream and your life and lets you know that you are perfectly normal, no matter how weird your dream images or storyline are.
  • Honour your dream– Do something in your waking world to keep the message of your dream alive and well. It is so easy to forget a dream and its details and it’s just as easy to watch your insights evaporate into thin air. When we honour a dream- Putting post-it notes with the dream’s message on your computer’s monitor, doodling the images in the dream, writing a poem (+ millions of other creative possibilities) keeps the dream’s insights within reach of your conscious mind. And when it is in your awareness, that is the point of change. Transformation becomes doable.
  • Call someone who just appeared in your dream- and say “Hey, I just dreamt about you!” Not only does it teach the listener that you value your dreams (and they can too) but it also says “I care”. Heart-Centered Dreamwork starts with a caring heart. Most likely that person appeared in your dream as a symbol or a projection of an aspect of yourself, so you don’t have to get too worked up imagining the dream is a precognitive message for them, just go with the synchronicity and have fun comparing notes. You never know but that person might have been dreaming about you too!
  • Share what you learn. By now, you’ve probably read a lot of blogs on dreams, maybe even several books. Talk about what you’ve learned with your friends, as you continue to share dreams. You might even want to lead a dream group for your friends or advertise a new dream group in the community. Before you know it friends and colleagues will be telling you their dreams and you will be known as an inspirational dreamer!

Blogging Oblivion: I suck at keywords!

I’m in Blogging Oblivion and apparently, according to the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) spam, I suck at keywords and most things technical. But to put a more positive spin on this, I’ve learned a lot but there’s definitely a learning curve for me when it comes to blogging! I just want to talk about dreams, Soul Coaching®, spirituality, life and the meditative benefits of doing dishes (or rather the benefits of my husband doing dishes), but my SEO plugins make it clear that what I want to say isn’t what people are searching for. Sigh. So it should come as no surprise to you that in an age when the local Librarian is as lonely as the Maytag Repair Man, that I named a tab on my website the “Dream Library”. Ya, I’m clearly not in the Adword groove yet.

Akashic? Isn’t That A Grain?

If you’ve just found my blog, scroll down to my post about Dream Dictionaries (June 10th, 2015 filed under Dreamwork Hacks). If you’ve already read it, you may remember that I have some strong opinions about dream dictionaries. While some offer interesting possibilities with symbolic and metaphorical associations, most are Dime Store hooey. (Btw, the “Dime Stores” are now Dollar Stores that seem to have a lot of labels with $2+ on them!) So why, then, do I have a section called the “Dream Library” and why does it resemble a dream dictionary? All good questions. I’ll try to explain.

Calling it a library, is a nod to the Akashic Records, the vast, other-dimensional storehouse that holds information about all things for all times. Theosophists and others started talking about it in the 19th century and many connect it with Atlantis and Lemuria. If you haven’t been in this library lately, get thee to the Akashic Records, available only as a download- no, not from iTunes-but during meditation and out-of-body journeys to alternate planes of existence. On Earth, in our times, perhaps the NY Public Library on 42nd Street or the Library of Congress in Washington comes close. Or, for a more current reference, it is like the Long-Term Memory in Inside Out. And, yes, I’m a bibliophile. I admit it. Don’t judge me.

Dream Dictionaries Again?

What’s up with my non-dictionary, dream dictionary then? It all started when I discovered that the most common question I get asked is “What does it mean when you dream about…?” (Never “when I dream about” but it was always a generic “you“! “Interrrresting”, says my psychotherapist-trained brain.) I get invited to speak at a lot of service organizations and women’s groups and I would prepare lots of information, historical, psychological, mystical and mythical. But no matter what I prepared I would often get interrupted with someone asking about a particular dream. And, since we’re friends, I can tell you that it used to bother me. No, I’m used to being interrupted, but these days, if I lose my train of thought, I might just miss my station. But it bothered me because it tells me that people still think they can just look up the meaning of a dream (or ask) et voila, the one-size-fits-all definition will appear and their dream will instantly become clear! They wanted me, as Dream “Expert”, to pronounce meaning on their dream and all I wanted to do, besides get through the material that I prepared, was coach them in finding the meaning for themselves.


Your Very Own Library of Possibilities

Still waiting to hear why I grew this Dream Library with symbols for dreamers to look up? Here’s the reason I did it: As Soul Coach, dream teacher and coach, and former body-mind therapist, I ultimately believe that we need to meet people where they are, start there, and from a place of respect, teach them how to work with their own dreams, without giving them all the answers. So, for those who were getting stuck on different symbols, I offer my Little Library of Possibilities. They are there to prime the pump of the dreamers’ own, personal associations, and they are not there as the final say for any of it. Only the dreamer can really say what any given symbol means for them. Radical, I know.

My goal is to expand this section over the summer so please write to me at and let me know what symbols you’re stuck on. We just won’t call it a dictionary so much as a resource library. Ok? As for keywords and the business of blogging… If everyone who finds their way here would tell three friends about this site, it will all take care of itself. 28 Days To Finding Your Life’s Purpose!

28 days to finding your life's purpose


You can find your life’s purpose in 28 days! How do I know this? A dream and 28 days of Soul Coaching®. After a lively discussion on Joseph Campbell with some spiritual girlfriends, I asked myself “What is my bliss?” Of course, dreams were at the top of the list, but was that the whole story, I wondered? So I decided to incubate a dream, meaning to focus on a question before bed so that I can get some answers in my dreams. I repeated “What is my bliss?” to myself as I fell asleep. I caught a dream that had me following a woman named Joy, going down multiple levels of stairs, down through a basement level, to a doorway where I found myself on the top of a stairway that descended into the water of a ritual bath below. As I am about to step into the water, contemplating the way in which I want to say a blessing, I awaken. There are a lot of details that I’m leaving out, to spare you a long dream analysis as it was quite a long dream, but the metaphor is clear: Follow my “joy”, go deeper and deeper below the surface…and it is a blessing!

And how lucky am I that I get to coach people from all over the world in finding their purpose? Then I use my training in dream work to add an additional layer of deep soul work. 28 Days to Finding Your Purpose?

Yes, really! In just 28 days! You don’t need to go to a mountain top, meditate for hours, channel guides, or do silent retreats. All that you need is a strong intention and a road map. Soul Coaching is the road map. After my Joy dream, which I still ponder and work on, all these years later, I know I’m on the right track. When I wonder if a project or new direction in my work is the right way to go, I refer back to my dream. If the work is in alignment with the dream, I do it! But life isn’t always as clear and simple as that sounds. There are always the “what if’s” and maybes and yes, even self-doubt. Do you question your decisions and direction too? I often doubt my motivation or curse my changing direction and beat myself up for procrastinating…But then I remember who I am (a beautiful, light-filled soul) and give myself some heart-centered TLC. Soul Coaching® is my road map, my ground, and my set-point where I return in order to lift myself out of my ancient, critical patterns and “old stories”. When life befuddles me, I go back to the 28 days, working through the four elements- air, water, fire and earth- within me, clearing away my confusion and getting rid of what I no longer need in my life. This week’s Inspirational Dreamer is Jean Campbell. Jean is a pioneer in Consciousness Studies, CEO of The iMAGE Project, founder of The World Dreams Peace Bridge, and 2006-2007 President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Her latest book, Group Dreaming: Dreams to the Tenth Power was published in 2006. Jean was gracious enough to appear on my radio show Dream Investigator and is a source of energy, light, laughter and wisdom at every IASD conference! (Plus we share a love of Jane Roberts’ The Nature of Personal Reality!)


Do you remember any childhood dreams? If so, what’s the earliest?

I recalled my first dream at age four, a lucid dream of flying down the stairs in my childhood home.  It was so much fun that I did it all night long.  Unfortunately, when I told my family that I’d spent the night flying down the stairs “and I didn’t even hurt myself,” they laughed and told me it was “just a dream.  I did not recall another dream until I was in my twenties.

When did you first get interested in understanding your dreams? How did that unfold for you?

Before the dreams mentioned above, I had begun to read Carl Jung and Edgar Cayce, sparking my interest in altered states of consciousness.  In quick succession, one night, I had three dreams involving archetypes so irresistible to me that I simply had to discover what they meant.

How did dreams play a role in your life, whether in decision making or in healing?

By the time I became Director of the Poseidia Institute in Virginia Beach in my early thirties, I had learned a fair amount about dream work; however, faced with the question of how to get people interested in a nonprofit organization dealing with consciousness studies I quickly caught on to the idea that dreams are the one “altered state of consciousness” all people share. and most people are comfortable to explore.  That led to my first book Dreams Beyond Dreaming, published in 1981.  Even though this was just at the very beginning of the current popular interest in dreams and dreaming, it was clear to me from the public response to that book that people were eager to understand more about dreams.

If you could give one piece of advice to those who are just starting to listen to their dreams, what would it be?

The dream work technique I teach and facilitate is called DreamWork/BodyWork because it involves working with the dream with the entire body, not just the logical mind.  Something indicated by recent research in psychotherapy is that “talk therapy” does not work as well with survivors of trauma (and the statistics on trauma are devastating) as nonverbal and creative techniques tend to work.  Also true is that studies on learning demonstrate that movement assists assimilation of information.  My advice then, in working with dreams of any type, is to feel the dream by moving through it in some way (walking, dancing, drawing, gestalt…)  And find some friends to do it with.

7 Reasons Why You Should Kick Your Ipad Out of The Bedroom


Yes, I really did kick my iPad out of my bedroom! I had to, not because my husband was complaining, and not because of the many studies done on people who were sleeping with their electronics and getting less sleep and along with a lower quality of rest and suffering the consequences. In fact, I had all sorts of good reasons to keep my gear near. After all, I had great “sleep” apps to track my sleep, my movements, including my restlessness, and my dreams! I needed Solitaire to wear my over-active mind out and make me give up consciousness. And there was always one more post to make, email to answer, FB friend in a different time zone to chat with. Until it began to dawn on me that my sleep was in fact suffering (I was restless 46 times in one night according to my Fitbit!), but worse than that, I hadn’t caught a dream in months! That was the straw that broke this camel’s back!

As you might imagine, my dreams are extremely important to me and simply put, without them I feel disconnected to Source and Soul. So with the encouragement of Laurel Bleadon-Maffei, channel for Josephus and the Wisdom Council, angel communicator and third cousin, once removed, extraordinaire, I agreed to a little experiment: to give up my electronics at bedtime—until my birthday seventeen days later—and see what happens. As I set my intention to start catching dreams again, I realized that my bad habits weren’t just at bedtime, but in how I wake up as well. Very quickly, I knew that I needed to create sacred space in order to make room for my dreams, which are sacred in their source and their uses. Dreaming, we learn who we are and why we are, we problem-solve, create, connect with community and the collective energy that we live in, and come into alignment with Higher Self and guidance.

When I work with my clients, whether as Soul Coach or Dream Coach, we always come around to the topic of sacred space. For some, it is the clutter of attitudes and beliefs that must be cleared, for others it is physical clutter that must be tackled and for me, it was my pile of electronics. So I cleared my space, put out an old-fashioned (yet cool turquoise Moleskine) journal next to my bed to record my dreams physically with pen in hand and began. I wrote down my intentions, wrote down a few lines about my day, put my iPad away at least an hour before bed and read a “bookbook” (Ikea) before closing my eyes.

Wham! Night one: a dream! Night two: a dream! Night three: dang, in that slippery state of mind, my dream evaporated in a split second! But I kept at it and in 17 nights, I caught a dream (sometimes a dream fragment, sometimes 2 dreams) on 15 of those nights. Success! On the morning of my birthday, although I hadn’t asked for any special dream, I was given a great dream! My dreams were back! Now here is why you should kick out your electronics too!


7 reasons


  1. Better sleep/more rest: Research shows that the blue LED lights of your computers and hand-held devices are messing with your pineal gland and the production of melatonin. The more you use them, the harder it is to fall asleep and get quality rest. Best not to mess with Mother Nature.
  2. Build your dream muscles: We all dream yet so many of us think otherwise. But with practice and a focused intention, you can build your dream-catching muscles. Once I put my devices away, my dream recall bounced right back.
  3. Create Sacred Space: I can’t emphasize the importance of this enough. Make space for dreaming by clearing away the clutter in your bedroom. Your sleeping chamber can become the “abaton”, the sleeping chamber of the ancient Greek healing temples where dreams were used for healing. All that from decluttering. Not too shabby.
  4. Connect with Source: If we dream, and we are created in the “image of God” then God must be a dreamer too. Dreaming can be a sacred practice for connecting with the sacred within and the Creator, the Great Dreamer.
  5. Know Thyself: Once you go “inside” you might as well get to know yourself. The ancients considered this a high calling. Once you are on the road to self-awareness, personal growth and self-knowledge, you will notice that dreams are all the “technology” for growth that you will need. Pay attention.
  6. Intuitive Windfalls: Did you read about the Canadian dreamer who, in 2006, dreamed the lottery numbers, twice? Really. She ran out to buy a second ticket with the same numbers and won $16 million! Ok, admittedly, I’m still waiting for that dream, but dreams can give you insight and warnings that are nothing short of a windfall for living authentically.
  7. More Space for dreams; More Space for the Sacred: Once you make more space for dreaming, physically, emotionally, mentally, then the spiritual uses for dreaming burst open wide. Et voila, you are living in alignment with your soul’s plan for your life. Not unlike physics, the more you delve into the mysteries of your dreams and your psyche, you cannot help but see the miraculous in your dreams and connect with something bigger- whatever you call the Force.

Once you get the hang of detaching from your devices and doing some stellar dream-catching, then the possibilities for your waking and dream life are endless. You will have kicked the ipad habit and set yourself free!
